Full kitchen remodel. The peninsula came out, a navy island went in, and the cabinets finally reach the ceiling.
What we did here
The kitchen on Carlin St was not falling apart. Cream raised panel doors, brown speckled granite, a peninsula with a painted post at the end of it. Everything worked. It just ate the room.
Two things were costing the family space. The peninsula pushed everyone into a corner, and the post made the last stretch of that counter unusable. Then, in the middle of the base run, there was an open desk gap: a knee space under the counter that had quietly become the spot where the dog bowl lived.
Both came out. The peninsula was replaced by a real island, freestanding, so nobody has to walk around a corner to reach the refrigerator. The desk gap became drawers and a built-in wine refrigerator.
The new cabinets are painted shaker and they run all the way to the ceiling. The old uppers stopped short and left a dust shelf above them; taking them full height gave back a row of storage the family did not have before, and it gives the crown molding something to land on.
The island is painted navy against all that white, and it is the only place in the room where the color changes. White quartz on top with a square edge, and the same quartz around the perimeter so the eye reads one continuous surface instead of two.
Behind the range, charcoal tile in a stacked bond that runs full height up to the hood. The range is black, the pulls are matte black, and the hood is stainless with a painted mantel above it. The dark notes repeat around the room rather than showing up once and looking accidental.
